Peacocks in the Hollywood Riviera – maybe you thought they were only prevalent in Palos Verdes??? Well, they are here. According to residents of Palos Verdes Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes, the peafowl population is exploding. Maybe they are running out of room and headed over to our Riviera neighborhood? Peafowl issues have historically been more prevalent in other Peninsula cities, but census takers attribute the boom to summertime procreation and the drought, sending birds into more neighborhoods in search of water.
Here is a photo two peahens on the front yard of an upper Calle Miramar resident. They were also caught on digital media crossing the street on upper Calle Miramar. This location is not too far from the Valmonte, Palos Verdes Estates line up at Via Colusa. It’s hard to imagine them overtaking our Hollywood Riviera neighborhood as well, but clearly it’s possible.
Residents in Rancho Palos Verdes neighborhoods complain of the peafowl destroying their gardens, waking them up at night by screeching outside their windows and defecating on their driveways. The city of RPV has ordinances against feeding of the peafowl as well as interfering with trapping them. Recent Rancho Palos Verdes census results shared at the City Council meeting Tuesday revealed that the number of peafowl in four neighborhoods more than doubled — from 125 to 285 — from June to October this year. Let’s hope the peafowl are not planning a take over of the Hollywood Riviera next!
